Understanding Financial Issues in the Games Industry

Understanding Financial Issues in the Games Industry In this article I will be writing about games which commercially failed and commercially succeeded and the costs involved in creating games, how it’s funded and issues facing small and indie studios. Costs involved in creating a game In this part I will explain the costs of developing a game and why some games were financial failures. When creating a game there will be costs. For example you will need to pay the production team for creating and coding the game, maybe rent out a building, buy hardware which will be compatible, buy software (but now game engines are becoming free.) Some games get crowdfunding to help with costs, websites like Kickstarter, Indiegogo and GoFundMe are all crowdfunding sites. But some games like Mighty No. 9 received a massive income from Kickstarter but the game got delayed many times and didn’t live up to the expectations of the supporters and fans. The advantages of crowdfunded games a

Trends in Game Development

Trends in Game Development Introduction In this article I will be explaining the current industry and marketing trends. In the second part I will be briefly writing about Financial Issues. Current Market Trends The current market trend is what gamers want to play and on which devices they would play it on. For example when Pokémon Go came out everyone who played it thought it was revolutionary as it used AR (Augmented Reality) to interact with the real world. So later this year (2017) or in the future we might see more games using AR. Another popular style of making the game feel realistic is VR (Virtual Reality) last year we saw a rise in the VR market as companies were bringing out VR headsets and VR supported games as VR was and still is popular.  Types of Audiences In the games industry companies create games to appeal to the audience and what’s popular at the time. Advancements in Game Development

Advancements in Game Development Facial recognition 3D Scanning and Facial Recognition technology allows systems to create your likeness in a game (so you can create a sprite which looks like you.) You can also transfer your own expressions as well. Another thing the Intel RealSense 3D camera allows developers to create games that adapts to the emotions of the gamer by scanning 78 different points on the person’s face. For example a few grimaces at your game screen means the system would dial down the game’s difficulty instantly. Voice recognition Voice controlled gaming has been around for a while but the potential of using the technology in gaming systems is now a reality, computers are now able to easily recognize voice commands from the user. Not only can you turn the console on and off using this technology but you can also use voice commands to control gameplay, interact on social media, play selections from your media library or search the web all by simply talking to

Unit 73: Sound for Games

Image
Unit 73: Sound for Computer Design In this article I will be comparing two pieces of music (The last of Us Theme Song by Gustavo Santaolalla and LittleBigPlanet 3 Dead Heat by Barry Adamson.) The Last of Us Main Theme by Gustavo Santaolalla  The Last of Us Main Theme by Gustavo Santaolalla is a sombre piece of music with a western feel to it. The main theme makes the game emotionally manipulative. The instrument used to make the song was a de-tuned guitar which produces a deep noise. The places the music was recorded in were a bathroom and a kitchen to get the right acoustics. Gustavo also used low harmonic tones to evoke a reaction from the player which would trigger their emotions. Little Big Planet 3 Dead Heat by Barry Adamson Little Big Planet Dead Heat by Barry Adamson is an cheerful, calm melody and sets the pace and the emotion for the level. The track is slightly sombre and plays with the emotions of the player. The song is looped so that the level can go
